Help Your Senior Citizens Have a Happy Holiday Season

istock-488721940Ho, ho, ho! It’s the most wonderful time of the year and there is a lot to do! Our days and nights are filled with shopping, decorating, cooking and holiday merriment.

For seniors, sometimes the holiday time isn’t so wonderful. This can be a lonely, sad season for those in skilled nursing facilities who may be separated from loved ones, and are no longer able to enjoy many of the activities they used to do at this time of year. But there are ways you can make this time of year better and brighter for the senior citizens you care about.

Give Them Your Presence

While we often associate the holidays with exchanging presents, the best gift you can give to a senior citizen is your time and attention. Schedule a visit during the holiday season – even a short visit is extra special to an elderly person. If your loved one is mobile, you might take them on a brief outing. You could attend a religious service, go to a holiday musical performance or just go for a drive and enjoy the holiday decorations in your area.

If logistics make it difficult to visit in person, send a cheerful letter or card with updates and family news. Be sure to keep the tone light and include photos! Following your letter up with a phone call will make your senior citizen’s holiday extra special.

Brighten Their Space

The common areas at Senior Care Centers are already festively decorated for the holiday season, but you can help make your senior’s room more homey and warm as well. Add a little holiday cheer with a holiday themed plant, such as a poinsettia or Christmas cactus. A pretty, battery operated candle is another easy way to make their room more cozy. Even a few colorful, shatterproof ornaments in a bowl add a nice touch.

Happy Holidays from Senior Care Centers

From everyone at Senior Care Centers, warmest wishes for a safe, healthy, happy holiday season, and a wonderful 2017.
